Our Musical Millennial is one of an incredibly talented crew of musicians in the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra. They have a concert today, and it will be live-streamed…which means you can take a listen if you’re into brand-new jazz compositions performed in a big-band setup.

Professor Jeff Hellmer leads the Jazz Studies Department in the Butler School of Music and is an accomplished jazz pianist in his own right

About the concert, from the web site:

Featuring repertoire of new originals from UT students and jazz faculty, as well as well-known jazz standards.

What’s on the Program?

A repertoire of new originals, indeed! See the full program here, or just check out the snapshot of it below.

The Musical Millennial (AKA Thomas Wenglinski) has two compositions on the playbill. The first one, 8:51 A.M. is a humorous but edgy tune about waking up late with only have a few minutes to get ready and get to class (or work, or church, etc.). I’ve heard it before, and it conjures up those familiar feelings in a creative new way. And how about the second tune, an original from Paulo Santos: Microscopic Intelligent Lifeforms Love Salad? That would make a great blog post title, and I know it will be a great tune because I’ve heard Paulo’s work before. That’s him below taking a solo on the saxophone, with the Musical Millennial behind him on the keys.

More posts about our Musical Millennial can be found here (you guessed it, I’m a proud mama; actually, every mama of these wonderful musicians is super-proud, and the papas, too).

How to Live Stream Today, November 15, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.

The concert will be live-streamed from this link from 7:30 – 9:00 CST today, Friday, November. I love to go in person when possible, but today I’ll be watching the live stream because I’m just getting back from London this afternoon. (I’m actually creating this post on the plane – yay for wifi!)

Missed the Live Stream but Still Want to Hear Some of the Music?

If you can’t watch the live-streaming concert tonight or stumble onto this post way after it is over – but really want to hear some of the music – you have options! Recordings will be posted later, and I promise to let you know. Or, you can hear a different version of the first tune, 8:51 A.M., from the Musical Millennial’s online music on Bandcamp (click here). You’ll see quite a collection of original jazz compositions there; 8:51 A.M. is in the album called Brother.
