Hollandaise in a Jar or a Package: Just Say No

Folks, some things are wrong, wrong, wrong, and one of them is hollandaise that is made from powder in a package or already made and presented to you in a jar. Don’t do it!

I can’t find the ingredients for these odious jars of “hollandaise” anywhere on the internet, but here’s what one of the packages contains:

‘CORN STARCH, MALTODEXTRIN, WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE (MILK), HYDROLYZED CORN PROTEIN, WHEAT FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, FERROUS SULFATE, THIAMIN MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), SUGAR, BUTTER (CREAM, SALT), ONION POWDER, CITRIC ACID, YEAST EXTRACT, HIGH OLEIC SUNFLOWER OIL, GUAR GUM, SALT, ANNATTO EXTRACT (FOR COLOR), PAPRIKA (FOR COLOR), TURMERIC (FOR COLOR), GARLIC POWDER, SOYBEAN OIL, SODIUM CASEINATE (MILK), SPICE, LEMON JUICE*, NATURAL FLAVOR.’

Whaaaaat? Real hollandaise has only a few ingredients: primarily butter, egg and lemon. There’s no reason to compromise and use these substandard products with all of those extra additives! If you don’t have time to make hollandaise, just squeeze a bit of lemon and melt a pat of butter over your broccoli.

I have an easy microwave recipe for hollandaise that I’ve been making for years, and will share it with you this weekend. A quick rhyme about it:

not from a package
not from a jar
you can make hollandaise
right where you are

Update: The Microwave Hollandaise Recipe

I posted the recipe! Give it a try and let me know what you think.

      • Oh that’s bad then! Even the frozen rolls aren’t as good as homemade. The only reason why I’d consider using the pre-made Hollandaise is because it’s so hard to make homemade…but I’ll try your version out!

Tell me your thoughts...
