A Year Ago Today: Paris Gare du Nord to London St. Pancras

Last June 28th was a Friday, and I was finishing a week of meetings in Paris. The Grill-Meister was in London, also for business trip. I had meetings in London the next week, so after work that day, I took the Eurostar high-speed train (“the chunnel train”) to meet him.

I was standing in line at the Gare du Nord station in Paris waiting to get my passport checked when the view of the passengers and trains below the gorgeous arches of the 1860s architecture struck me as something I’d want to capture and remember.

So many people, each headed intently to something, or someone, or perhaps away from something, or someone. Each person with a story, each with their own hopes and dreams, all momentarily together in this busy international hub.

A year later, it looks strange to see so many people so close together in public. Without masks. It all looks so carefree and spontaneous, almost otherworldly compared to our 2020 reality.

I’m glad I took the picture. I’m glad I have the memory. I’m glad we were in London and Paris last year at this time. I know we will be back.

Once I arrived in London that night, we met at Da Corradi, our favorite Italian restaurant for a decade, my taxi zooming straight there from the St. Pancras station. Da Corradi is tiny but they made room for my giant suitcase by the bar and greeted me like family.

You’ve likely heard me rave about Da Corradi here before. If not, and if you’re ever planning to go to London, you can and should read about it below. This place is the real deal and is a MUST-VISIT restaurant when we are in London.

That’s all for today, friends, just a little reminiscence about travel.

Stay safe out there, y’all.

  • London? That hellhole? I have to go there enough to see my SIL and nephews. I even made a picture of SIL walking her mom’s little dog while he stopped to relieve himself on palace property. I really like that dog.
