watching, waiting for the unknowable ending~ what's on the last page?
The haiku was inspired by mourning doves in the early morning at Gumbo Cove … were they sentries? Signposts?
They seemed like they were anxiously awaiting something.
Waiting for an election. Waiting for a vaccine. Waiting until we feel safe again.
Or maybe the doves were watchful.
Maybe they had seen the alligator that swam slowly past us the next day, a silent monster of muscle and menace.
Perhaps nature is just falling in line with signs of the times; choose your own metaphor.
