Some Days, You’re the Windshield; Some Days, You’re the Bug (and How the Rose Helped)

“Some days, you’re the windshield, some days, you’re the bug,” someone once said.

I could argue with that, a little… what if I don’t want to be the windshield OR the bug, but simply a serene person in alignment and communion with the world?

But I remember how I laughed out loud when I first heard that phrase, from a lovely man more than 20 years my senior who I had the good fortune to have on my team back in the 90s when I was a young manager.

I laughed when he said it, in response to something that had happened at work, because I recognized the truth of it. There have been many days when I was the windshield, and regretted it, and others when I was the bug, and wished it wasn’t so.

I had a Bug Day this week, mostly fueled by fatigue, and probably some stress over the COVID resurgence (although I’m healthy, as are my family members – I wish the same for you and yours).

But I don’t feel comfortable in Bug Mode… I don’t like to feel down or sorry for myself, or depressed. (Who does?)

15 minutes outside communing with nature in the backyard at Glover Gardens turned me around.

It didn’t hurt that there was one perfect rose, blooming in spite of being scraggly from the after-effects of the Big Texas Freeze of 2021. And that the sun seemed to be a spotlight for that beautiful bloom as I was looking at it.

That perfect rose told me that I should take a deep breath, relax, and believe.

So I did.

Here’s a haiku for it.

thank you perfect rose
your crimson velvet petals
restored my repose

Wishing you health, roses and days when you’re neither the windshield nor the bug…

    • Wow, full circle! Do you believe in the concept that there are no coincidences? Thank goodness you are in my life, and thank you for the info – I thought that the saying was an old southern one, like “cuter than a speckled pup under a covered wagon”. 😊 (Good thing I confessed before that I was somewhat removed from popular music in the 90s and early 2000s and missed a LOT of great stuff.) Sharing and listening in this blog has certainly been a learning experience for me, and you’ve been a big part of that.

I’m going to update the post, and if I can find a copyright-appropriate version, will put a link to the tune on it.

Also – yay! Your name is your name here, and not “Someone”. I have NO idea what changed.

      • There are never any coincidences. That’s very kind. And, that goes both ways. As far as The Bug goes, there is a great fan video of MCC turning it into rock n roll at some festival. If not that one, use what you find. I can say that. 🙂 I know some stuff which is a function of age.

If you get Hulu, there is a documentary called McCartney 3 2 1. It’s a conversation with songs and stories with A list producer Rick Rubin. It shows Sir Paul at his humblest. Rubin says this intro is perfect and Paul says, then I come in and ruin it.

      • Ha. I didn’t see this, your name here. One other thing, it’s very cool watching McCartney with Musical Miss who gets up from time to time and plays air guitar.

  • @Ray, Oops, I’m looking at the comments in backward order and didn’t see the earlier one about Sir Paul. Cool, I’ll check out that show if I can. I don’t know if we have Hulu or not, sadly; that’s the Grill-Meister’s dept.
