spring forward (a coronavirus poem for national poetry month)

spring forward

the green of asparagus
and oak trees
the fluttering of wings
and dandelion fluff
rerooting us in
the reality
that nature is
still in control
of her seasons

spring backward

a silent killer
slithering among us
exhausted workers
and overfilled morgues
rerooting us in
the reality
that COVID-19
controls its spread
(unless we distance)

spring sideways

passing others
at the grocery store
wearing our masks
(smiling with our eyes)
rerooting us in
the reality
that our distance
doesn’t keep us from
connecting

spring back to our future

resilience
empathy and love
are the strongest
contagions
rerooting us in
the reality
that our humanity
and sanity will control
our destiny
