Cooking and gardening are my creative passions; but as I have noted before, I have other loves, one of which is travel. I love to hit the road!
Give me a new place, a map, a camera and enough time to explore, and I’m a happy woman.
One of the best things about traveling is soaking up new cultures, foods and traditions. There are so many cool things to learn from other places in the world. Wherever I go, I try to learn about how the locals live and the foods they love.
As I absorb new locales or relish the comfort of places I’ve been many times, I take hundreds of photos, which ensures that at least a dozen or two will be worth sharing. I come by this naturally – my mom was a shutterbug and kept wonderful travelogue scrapbooks throughout her life, and my Dad was still adding to his photography skills and collection of cameras when he died in the summer of 2017. He had amazing journeys to catalogue in his travels with my Aunt-Mom, including treks to Turkey, various European locations, the Caribbean and even Machu Pichu, well into his 70s.
I originally started this blog in the spring of 2015 to document and share my recipes, but I’ve realized that I have more to share than just how to make a wonderful meal. So I’m collecting and sharing my occasional travel-based posts and musings, in case they will be meaningful to any of you out there. I had one such post recently that touched a chord, the one titled Comfort Food Alert: The “Best Gratin in Paris” (or maybe anywhere). A high school friend of mine was traveling in Paris when I published this post, and visited the restaurant I profiled in it with her girlfriends on their last night of a long and wonderful trip. They loved it! There’s nothing like that feeling of validation when someone follows your recommendation, and enjoys it just as much as you did.
I really enjoy reading travelogues from others and stumbled onto a neat blog from a college student. She did a really nice post of eight favorite travel quotes: click here. Her blog is where I found the quote at the top of this page.
Travel is eye-opening, insight-producing, humbling, inspiring, sense-making…Here’s what Mark Twain had to say about it in his book Innocents Abroad:
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
