It’s Valentine’s Day, and we’re hunkering down at Glover Gardens in Southeast Texas, out of COVID caution and cold avoidance.
We often stay home for Valentine’s to avoid the hype and crowds, and we’re not feeling too sorry for ourselves because we’re cooking up some Honey Chipotle Pork Spareribs. Yum! And sure, ribs can be romantic! They actually go very well with champagne. Here’s the recipe, in case you get in the mood for ribs soon.
We’re also doing a rewind and reminiscing about last Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s was one of the last “normal” holidays before the onset of COVID, and it seems so long ago now. The Grill-Meister and I celebrated Valentine’s of 2020 at Field’s restaurant in Bay St. Louis during one of our weekends at Gumbo Cove, and wow, was it special! We looked at the pictures this morning and relived a wonderful night of being spoiled by a restaurant that knows how to do it right.

A rose was there for me when we arrived; such an inviting table setting! 
We started with fabulous Chargrilled Oysters 
…and bright, fresh Tuna Crudo with Mango Puree 
The second course was creamy Roasted Artichoke Soup and a Chef’s Salad with Bacon-Cornbread Croutons (which were as good as they sound) 
Our mains were a perfect Filet on Garlic Parmesan Mash and Fried Triple Tail with Gulf Shrimp, Succotash and an Herb Puree 
And then, just when we thought we couldn’t eat any more, this Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Panna Cotta arrived with champagne, and we joyfully found room 
It was a lovely evening
Thank you, Fields, for a night to remember. The meal, the ambiance, the service, the warmth with which we were greeted… it was all juuuuuuust right.

We eat there for lunch because they still have their relatively inexpensive lunch menu, They still have their 25 cent Martini specials, They now limit them to three because people would get liquored up and settle grudges. 🙂
And also, what did you order???
I knew this was gonna happen so…Turtle Soup, Late Winter Truffle Croquette, Pecan Crusty Black Drum, Duck Three Ways, Winter Veggies, Tangy Bacon Braised Cabbage, Piety and Desire Chocolate Cake, Pecan Pie a la Mode. All of this was 1 2/2 orders because there are six of us. The four of us plus Granny Sue, plus MCC who has been here for a couple of weeks to get out of the cold. Little did we know… She drove and brought Angus (Yellow Lab) and White Kitty. NJ & MCC have been writing and playing together.
OMG, this is amazing. I’m so living vicariously through y’all. Sorry for the late response, we’ve had a few power issues of late. We obviously have similar tastes, because I would love every dish you ordered (unless there were beets in the Winter Veggies, of course). Yum, yum, yum. Oh for the day when we can go there again!!! Happy Late Valentine’s Day to “all y’all”.
I know. My friends in Dallas still have no power. They are complaining about 46 hours. I don’t have the heart to tell them that after Katrina I didn’t have power for 83 days.
No beets in the winter veggies. They are all locally sourced. I’ve never heard of anybody growing beets around here.
Ani enjoyed the turtle soup although she said the meat tasted like alligator. She has wide ranging tastes. I told she was close since they are both reptiles and then I said they were left over dinosaurs and she loved that.

Two days later and everybody was very sad. Mardi Gras Tuesday. No parades. No walking parades. Bars were closed. Restaurants were reduced to 25%, which many of they stayed close because they can’t make enough money. Most of the Quarter was close with the NOPD and the state trooper orders to ticket anyone the tried to get in. Yes. We still had Yardi Gras with a couple thousand houses decorated as floats. Because it is so cold, very few cars stopped by. We had more in the days that lead up to Mardi Gras.
