Happy Fall, y’all!
It’s the first day of autumn in the northern hemisphere, but summer colors are still going strong at Glover Gardens. The yard is full of cheer and inspiration, and we’re buoyed by an almost imperceptible mellowing of the heat and the gentle breeze that signals crisp and cool days ahead. The summer doesn’t want to let go, though.
Summer’s not yielding -
verdant, vibrant, vivacious -
cheeky Fall welcome
Updated to include the haiku for the haibun dVerse prompt.

Early fall can be absolutely beautiful in Southeast Texas, or it can be a miserable continuance of the cruel, cruel summer. Today, it’s the latter – the high temperature here today is only forecasted at 92℉ (33.3℃), a far cry from the brutal 101℉ in August (38.3℃). Not that I’m complaining – it got to 109℉ on multiple days last summer!
But that’s all behind us now, at least until next August (fingers crossed!). Today, we’re just enjoying the beautiful bounty nature is giving us. I was especially pleased by the Don Juan roses blooming atop the arch, with the morning glories behind it (to the right) and the knockout roses beside. The morning glories were planted for us by birds, we think. Those pretty lavender flowers showed up this summer all around the natural border on the perimeter, to our delight.

The Grill-Meister gave me the arch for an anniversary gift over a decade ago, and I love its sturdy, rusty form.

I have a romantic fantasy that someone will propose to their beloved under the arch one day, or at the very least, would take some engagement photos there. (Unmarried young people in the fam and extended fam, this is a hint! I’ll provide the champagne, I’ll take the pictures, I’ll even fertilize the roses to get more blooms if you give me some advance notice… 🙏🏻)

The hibiscus are happy today, with most of them giving me at least one flower.

Winged creatures are enjoying the first day of fall, too, and The Grill-Meister is outside right now refilling all their feeders. Hummingbirds and butterflies have been enjoying the blossoms, but alas, the hummingbirds have been fighting each other over the nectar feeders. We hung up a third one to try to bring some peace.
Speaking of peace, that’s the overwhelming mood in the backyard at Glover Gardens today. We’ll continue with our house and yard puttering this afternoon, have a Happy Cocktail at the Treehouse and then finish off the day making our Easiest Salmon Burgers in the outdoor kitchen.
Happy fall, y’all!

Leaves are changing colour, pumpkin-flavoured items are making their way back into menus, and stores are stocking up on sweaters. I am very excited for the first day of autumn as there’s something magical when the summer is slowly fading away, and autumn is setting in. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
You nailed it! There’s definitely something magical as summer fades into fall.
