Our Vampires Buzz
in the summer in the south
our vampires buzz
tiny vicious Draculas
whose stinging bites
feed beastly appetites
(for human blood)
picnic-ruining bloodsuckers
breed like rabbits
changing our habits
(forcing us indoors)
in the summer in the south
our vampires buzz
(then bite)
This mosquito lament was written in response to the dVerse Poets Pub prompt for a quadrille (44-word poem) that includes the word “vampire”.

My apologies if this makes you itch!

They do indeed buzz, suck and drive us indoors. Alas, your biting descriptions bring back none-too-distant memories!
Sorry about that!
They are always very eager to victimize innocent barbecue-goers and home gardeners everywhere. They love my ankles which is why I often wear two pairs of socks.
that’s a great tip – but wow, it’s kind of hot, isn’t it?
In Ireland, the temperatures barely go over 20’C and it’s always blustery
Ohhhhh, then 2 pairs of socks is a bonus track!
Damn, you ain’t wrong Kim… 👹
I tell it straight.

Awesome – thank you! I hadn’t heard it but wow, do I recognize the truth of those lyrics.
Vampiric mosquitos may suck, but this fine poem does NOT!
Thank you!
I enjoyed your mosquito lament, Kim. I complain about being by gnats, but they are nothing compared to your ‘tiny vicious Draculas’.
Also in the north I am afraid
make them go away!!!! (please?)
Would that I could, Ren.
Nasty little things!
Great poem – I love the analogy and your take on these little guys.
Thank you, Willy!
