I just learned that today is National Gumbo Day. Who knew?
If you are as fascinated as I am by the topic of gumbo, you can read all about it in the National Today Calendar: Gumbo Day, November 12.
We love a good, thick, rich, steaming bowl of gumbo! That’s our concoction below, in a fun bowl that was a gift from a dear friend and colleague.

Gumbo is a Revered Tradition at Glover Gardens
In honor of National Gumbo Day, here’s our Glover Gardens Gumbo recipe:
Gumbo is so important in our family history that we have a whole series about it here in the blog:
- Gumbo Series, Part 1: Good Gumbos are Like Sunsets
- Gumbo Series, Part 2: Gumbo, It’s a Family Affair
- Gumbo Series, Part 3: The Communal Nature of Gumbo-Making
- Gumbo Series, Part 4: A Family Cooking Class is the Final Test of the Glover Gardens Gumbo Recipe
- Gumbo Series, Part 5: The Glover Gardens Chicken and Sausage Gumbo Recipe – Finally!
And yes, the theme of that first one is true – good gumbos are like sunsets, in that no two are the same.
World Championship Gumbo Cookoff
There’s a Gumbo timeline on the National Today site, but it doesn’t even approach the rich history of gumbo, but highlighted something I didn’t know: there’s a “World Championship Gumbo Cookoff” in our neighboring Louisiana – who knew?

Even though the history of gumbo has so much more depth and cultural meaning in many different regions across the world than the article acknowledged, it was great to learn about the annual World Championship Gumbo Cookoff in New Iberia. It’s going on right now – today and tomorrow – and was the impetus for the creation of National Gumbo Day.
Guess where I’ll be on the 2nd Saturday in November next year?? Just as an enthusiastic eater, mind you, not as a competitor. My gumbo is really, really good, but those competitions are FEROCIOUS. And I don’t have a big enough gumbo pot. Yet. 😎
Gumbo Fun with Gen AI Art
Just for fun, and to further honor National Gumbo Day, here are some AI-generated images that I ‘created’ by using a prompt about chicken and sausage gumbo served in cobalt blue pottery by the pool, in the style of different artists.

Aren’t those fun? My faves are the Miro with that wicked-looking bird, and the Manet, for the peaceful setting. Which one do you like the best?
Any Day is a Good Day for Gumbo
Back to reality, that’s our Glover Gardens gumbo by the pool. Yum!

In my book, any day is Gumbo Day. Pass the Tabasco!
