I’ve said it before: January is a funny little throwaway month. Stuck between the food- and family-packed festivities of December and the promise of spring’s warm caress, January is just in the way, like that pesky trip-hazard roller-skate on the bottom stair. It’s cold and gray, a time for regrets (that third dessert at the holiday party) and resolutions (only kale and carrots this month!). We need a January Strategy.
In January, I sip my hot drinks, wrap myself in a cozy blanket, and dream of the warmer climes and better times ahead. Here’s a hot drink you might like if January has you singing the “B*tch, it’s cold!” Blues (but hot tea works just fine, too).
I call this tradition January Dreaming. It’s my coping mechanism for this month of Mondays, and it’s about remembering and imagining. Capturing and sharing awesome adventures that didn’t yet get their time in the blog spotlight because I was too busy living them to write about them, and imagining even brighter days in the future sun that will spawn stories like dandelion fluff riding in the summer wind.
It’s time to hunker down, stay warm and dream bright dreams. That’s what January Dreaming is about. The series started way back in 2019, and you can find the archive here: January Dreaming. My Mom’s strong feelings about January was the inspiration; see the post below.
Here’s my dream to kick-start this year’s January Dreaming: Miami in May. Our Musical Millennial will graduate from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music with a Doctorate in Jazz Studio Arranging, and that trip is more than worthy of a January dream or two. It will be a joyful celebration in a colorful, sun-drenched city and we’ll create vibrant and lasting memories over several days with a big group of extended family. Our hashtag is #Miami2025, and you’ll definitely hear about it here on the pages of the Glover Gardens blog. For today’s dreams, I’ve been looking at pictures from a visit last April, and chose just two to share.
The casual pose of a peacock, just hanging out on the sidewalk.

The peacocks are everywhere in Miami! It is so cool how they peacefully coexist with people, although some locals might question the peacefulness, given their shrill voices. Peacocks got something to say, people! Thomas (AKA Our Musical Millennial) composed a song, The Peacocks, for his U Miami Masters’ Project, which captures the essence of those beautiful and cacophonous birds. You can find it wherever you get your music online; here it is in Bandcamp and you can listen right from here by clicking the white play button on the bottom left of the artwork. I hope you love the peacock calls from the trumpets mid-tune as much as I do.
We’ll follow our previous protocols during #Miami2025 and visit several gardens during our trip; here’s a photo from the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden that whispers and beckons with a seductive promise of a lush, verdant, slightly wild landscape. That’s exactly what you get there.

That’s all for now, but stay tuned for more of our January dreams!
And what are you dreaming about on this winter’s day?

I just started my pepper seeds!
That’s January Dreaming and January PLANNING, right there! Payoff in late spring, early summer, right? There are soooo many things you can do with peppers. I usually get plants but you might have pushed me on over to the seed approach. Thank you!
I use this system to start my seeds. It’s foolproof. And if you’ve read my reports you know I’m a fool! Once my peppers are growing I’ll put them in small pots and start my tomato seeds. Depending on the weather I’d like to be putting plants in the ground outside around Feb 25th.

We don’t get January blues in Glasgow – well, not for long. In a couple of weeks Celtic Connections (music festival) starts. Can’t wait!
I wouldn’t have the blues, either, if the Celts were coming my way with their lovely songs and dances! I will be sure to come to your blog for the Glasgow Gallivanter stories.
January being like “a month of Mondays”? — so true. What a great idea though to think on “warmer” things. Those photos do the trick!
Thank you, Dora, you obviously “get” the need for January Dreaming!
