Quadrille: Yeasty Love Poem

when you rise
from your slumber
I’ll give you some sugar
and a warm bath
then, bubbling,
you’ll be awaking

i’ll add flour, salt and
anoint you with oil,
set to work kneading
(you’ll rise some more);
i’ll shape you,
then finally, the baking

My, oh my, did I have fun with this prompt from the dVerse Poets Pub! The post Let’s have a Slumber Party! asks that participating poets write a quadrille (44 words, no set format or rhyming requirement) using the word “slumber”, and makes a great point about how slumber is not the same as sleep.

I’ve been wanting to combine my passion for food with my passion for words and this one did it. The 44-word poem (quadrille) is an ode to yeast and its heady ability to rise from slumber and make something akin to love. I’m specifically thinking of my grandmother Mema’s yeast rolls, which have been featured here in Glover Gardens and which stand alone as the Best. Rolls. Ever.

I hope you feel the abiding love I have for yeast, and that you will go and visit the folks at dVerse to see what the other poets did with the word “slumber”: Let’s have a Slumber Party! .
