Gifts from the Kitchen: Why Not Make Spice Mixes?

There’s nothing like a homemade gift to warm the cockles of holiday hearts, especially in these days of rampant big-box store commercialism. Avoid those delivery vans clogging the streets and driving like predatory beasts and spend some quality time in your kitchen making spicy concoctions that will guarantee you are remembered – and praised – every time the spices are used.

Zippy Cajun is THE BOMB for gumbo

I know what I’m talking about, my friends, because I’ve been spreading the Glover Gardens spice mix love for well over a decade with my colorful jars of bursting flavor. Eyes light up with anticipation when folks retrieve a spice mix jar from their stocking, or grab one as a take-home holiday party favor. Those same eyes give way to actual gleams and sparkles when they remove the lid, sniff deeply, and imagine the amazing dishes they can make with these perfect spice mixes.

I’m not exaggerating, truly. Most of my spice creations are in the “Zippy” line, starting with the first and most popular, Zippy Southwest. Zippy fandom has brought me unlimited joy, validating my creative instincts and reassuring me that I’ve done something good for the cooking world. I get pestered in a wonderful way when the Zippy is running low at various households, with sad pictures of almost-empty jars and pleading emojis. I feel so validated!

This picture came to me recently, with a “Houston, we have a problem”-type message; I was happy to provide a refill!

High-quality homemade spice mixes are beloved because they are guilt-free time-savers when you’re cooking. No need to measure a bit of this and a bob of that; the right spice mix for your recipe has a Goldilocks, just-right perfection. We use our spice mixes for EVERYTHING, with excellent results.

So trust me that jars of spice mixes are happy-making gifts. They’re also quick, easy, durable and cost-effective. I buy big containers of the frequently-used herbs and spices and small, attractive jars, and also recycle all reusable jars for gifting. Take a look! What you see isn’t fancy, but fabulous. It’s the taste that counts!

Sometimes a bigger jar is called for; some households go through a LOT of Zippy
