January Dreaming: A Delightful Afternoon in Copenhagen

January Dreaming is our series about staying warm in the dreariest of months by reminiscing about (or anticipating) good times in warmer climes. Today’s contribution to this annual series is another look at our trip to Copenhagen last summer. It was our Musical Millennial (my son) and me, along with his Dad (my ex and now close friend) and his Dad’s fiance, and we had a marvelous time. The first Copenhagen post was about jet lag survival strategies, not a part of the January Dreaming series, but definitely a imporant part of the Glover Gardens approach to international travel. Check it out below.

A Traditional Lunch; A Sense of Place in Every Plate

After the coffee featured in that post, we had a wonderful traditional lunch at Restaurant Karla. Eating traditional local food is a great way to jump-start a good time in a foreign city and really makes you feel like “you’re not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy”. There’s a sense of place in every plate; you can see it in our open-faced sandwiches, AKA “Smørrebrød”, below.

“Sol over Gudhjem”, a smoked herring open-faced sandwich served with raw egg yolk, chives and radish – that was my lunch choice, and it was delicious!

Join Us On Our Afternoon Walk

After lunch, my son and I set out on foot to get to know the city. It was a 24,000-step day for me! We went from city squares with public fountains and statues to a pedestrian-only shopping district with high-end stores in centuries-old buildings to public parks and a charming riverside. There were flowers and bicycles everywhere, and the history was palpable. Copenhagen is well worth the trip! The photos are from both my son and me.

I hope you enjoyed our afternoon tour through parts of Copenhagen; there’s still a lot to share, but that’s for another day.

More January Dreaming to Come

The ‘arctic cold’ has made it to Southeast Texas and we even have snow in tomorrow’s forecast. That is sooooo very unusual for us. This why we are January Dreaming this afternoon, and I know we’ll be doing more of it through the next few brutally cold days. Looking at these Copenhagen photos again has me longing for summer travel to faraway places, but for now, I’m headed to the kitchen to make focaccia for the first time in about a decade. There’s January Dreaming, and then there’s January Eating… both have their place!
