Avocado-Yogurt Sauce

Some recipes start as supporting players and end up stealing the spotlight, and this avocado-yogurt sauce is one of them. Cool, creamy, and full of bright herbal flavor, it brings together the richness of avocado, the tang of yogurt, and the fresh lift of lime, cilantro, and mint.

The sauce is the perfect compliment to a spicy meat patty with fresh, bright add-ons

Originally created as a complement to our turkey cevap, this sauce quickly proved it had a much bigger role to play. It is the kind of simple, fresh, flavor-packed addition that can elevate just about anything you put on the table.

Recipe: Avocado-Yogurt Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 large, ripe avocado
  • 1/4 bunch cilantro, chopped
  • 5 large mint leaves, chopped
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1/2 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Blend all ingredients except the salt in a mini-processor or blender until smooth, then season with salt to taste. For a more rustic texture, mash the avocado by hand and stir in the remaining ingredients for a slightly chunky, more textured sauce.

Notes

  • To adjust the consistency, add a tablespoon of water or wine if you prefer a looser, more drizzleable sauce
  • Balance the taste: depending on the tartness of your yogurt and lime, you may want to adjust the salt slightly to bring all the flavors into harmony
  • You have total “herb flexibility” and can tweak the ratio of cilantro and mint based on your preference, because the sauce is very forgiving; you can even substitute other herbs, like basil for the cilantro

The Backstory

As I noted above, I created this avocado-yogurt sauce to accompany our version of cevap, inspired by a Middle Eastern lamb patty recipe from Epicurious, which featured a simple yogurt and herb sauce. But I could not resist taking it a step further. (That’s how I roll.)

Avocado felt like a natural evolution, bringing a subtle richness that softens the tang of the yogurt and rounds out the sharper herbal notes. That instinct paid off. The result is a sauce that is both vibrant and soothing, creamy avocado, tangy yogurt, bright cilantro and mint, and the citrusy spark of fresh lime.

It became the perfect partner for our boldly spiced turkey cevap, balancing heat and depth with freshness and lift.

Other Tasty Uses for the Avocado-Yogurt Sauce

This sauce is endlessly versatile, cooling, herbaceous, and just rich enough to feel indulgent without being heavy. Try it:

  • Spooned over grilled meats like turkey cevap, lamb, or chicken
  • As a spread for wraps, pita sandwiches, or burgers
  • Dolloped onto grain bowls with roasted vegetables and chickpeas
  • As a dip for crudités or warm flatbread
  • Alongside spicy dishes as a creamy counterpoint

It is the kind of sauce that quietly steals the show.
