I’m posting a children’s poem to answer the call of the dVerse Poets Pub prompt to write a quadrille poem (44 words exactly) using the word “dog” in some form. My instant thought comprises the first lines of the poem, although it took me a little while to craft the rest of it. I have a deep and abiding admiration of the late poet Ogden Nash, whose whimsical and nonsensical poems were oft-read by my grandmother, and I can imagine her cheerful, dramatic voice reading me this one.
Wombat Rides Again
“Hot diggity dog,”
said the wombat to the frog,
“I won a trip to the Matterhorn
where I hope to ride a unicorn.”
“Jiminy Cricket,
but that’s a sticky wicket!
Remember all that hullabaloo
the time you stole a kangaroo
to chase a jackalope?”
