I’m posting a children’s poem to answer the call of the dVerse Poets Pub prompt to write a quadrille poem (44 words exactly) using the word “dog” in some form. My instant thought comprises the first lines of the poem, although it took me a little while to craft the rest of it. I have a deep and abiding admiration of the late poet Ogden Nash, whose whimsical and nonsensical poems were oft-read by my grandmother, and I can imagine her cheerful, dramatic voice reading me this one.

Wombat Rides Again
“Hot diggity dog,”
said the wombat to the frog,
“I won a trip to the Matterhorn
where I hope to ride a unicorn.”
“Jiminy Cricket,
but that’s a sticky wicket!
Remember all that hullabaloo
the time you stole a kangaroo
to chase a jackalope?”

Oh, how much fun I had creating this little piece of whimsy! Thank you, De Jackson, for the prompt, and your encouragement for us to “have some doggone fun with it”. Dear Readers, if you want to read some of the other poems, head on over to “Mr. Linky“, which provides links to all of them. Or just come on over to the dVerse Poets Pub and submit your own creations. There are prompts each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
And yes, I used AI to create the silly illustrations for my nonsensical children’s poem in the style of Mr. Nash. 😊 No regrets.
