Late December Light and Seagulls, Plus a Gratitude Haiku

Quiet time at Gumbo Cove and the surrounding area in Bay St. Louis over the holidays is soul-nourishing and haiku-inspiring.

You can see why… feel the peace of the beach as we fed the seagulls yesterday.

It was overcast, windy and chilly, but the soft muted light and enthusiasm of the gulls for our offerings swept away big-city tensions.

I love watching them and taking pictures to enjoy later. They soar, swoop and strut.

In the evening, the winter sunset glowed pastel, bringing its enchanting light to the harbor and the main drag in this tiny coastal Mississippi town. We enjoyed this feast for the eyes from the second story of a local bar and restaurant, hanging out with a treasured cousin on the last night of his trip to visit us at Gumbo Cove. We shared stories and memories, and plans for the future.

It was a reminder to be grateful for the little things, or perhaps not-so-little things: the company we keep, the natural environment we’re in, the stories we tell, the memories we make.

This inspired a haiku:

memory treasures:
seagulls, sunsets and stories
(coastal winter light)

Wishing you peaceful times and memories to treasure as we move toward the new year. What are you doing as 2025 comes to a close?
