Memorial Day.
A day of remembrance and somber reflection about the human cost of war?
A day of barbecues, beer and sunscreen?
Both, perhaps? (I’m not judging.)
It’s a travel day for me (from Little House in the Rockies all the way to Paris, France), so I’ll re-share last year’s post. I’m still feeling it. I hope you’ll give it a read and let me know what you think.
Whatever your Memorial Day thoughts and plans, I hope they are safe and peaceful. Enjoy this image of a hairy woodpecker feasting on suet at Little House in the Rockies with our flag in the background. I’m sure there’s a metaphor there, somewhere, somehow. If you find it, please share.

I love Downy Woodpeckers! I didn’t see a red cap so I am assuming it’s a female? The males boldly wear a red beret on their head. Have a blessed Memorial Day!
I think you might be right, although I also think you may know more about Downy Woodpeckers than we do at Glover Gardens and Little House in the Rockies. We are still learning bird sensibilities.
Hi Katherine, I think you probably know more about these beautiful birds than I do…so let’s say yes, it’s a female. We saw a lot of birds on this last trip that we don’t normally see, and I’ll be busy looking them up when I have a free moment or two.
