I saw this sign in the Montrose area of Houston last weekend and snapped the picture as the car rolled by. (I was a passenger, don’t worry!)
It’s a quote from the amazing Barbara Jordan, who is often simply described as the first black American congresswoman, but who must be described as an American legend to really get it right: she was a lawyer, political and civil rights leader, educator, role model, orator and a pioneer in many ways. She said:
“One thing is clear to me: we, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.”

Simple, profound and essential, this message is timeless, and yet I feel that there is an underlying urgency about it right now.

And we should remind us of it anytime we feel strange about another that is different, because also feeling strange about the unknown and different is human. And the great thing that makes us humans so amazing is that we got the choice to look beyond our feelings and emotions and let them go and see that we’re all human. We may be different, but we’re the same in being human with all our beautiful diversity.
