The dVerse Poets Pub has issued a prompt to write a quadrille (44 words) using the word bloom (click here). I’ve got this! We had a perfect grandparent day last Saturday, which is an awesome inspiration for this grandparent poem. Only teensy bits of our joy can be expressed in the 44-word form, but our memories are much larger than this tiny poem.

Grandparent Joy Blooms on Dandelion Wind
grandparent day blossomed
as grandboys flew into our arms
before soccer’s errant kicks and laughter
later, sunlight backlit
our towheaded angels
wishes blown on dandelion wind
small hands gathering flowers for Mom
(for Mother’s Day)
love is our bloom
that never withers
or dies

My friends, we had the best grandparent day on Saturday! Those little boys, age 3 & 5, are dynamic, loquacious, loving and fun. After a great day that started with a soccer game and blossomed into more experiences, my heart was already full by the time we arrived at our restaurant for dinner. Then I had the privilege of taking a walk with them while we were waiting for our food.
They picked dandelions and blew on them to make wishes. Be still my heart!
They picked buttercups for their Mom, “for Mothers’ Day”.
They ran circles around each other, hung upside down on a jungle gym. and paused, intentionally, to study ant beds.
They taught me, once again, how to live.
They taught me, once again, how to love.

Lovely! I want to run with them in the excitement of everything!
That’s exactly how I felt!
From another grandmother with two grandsons, your quadrille resonated with me, Kim. I especially love
‘…sunlight backlit
our towheaded angels
wishes blown on dandelion wind’.
You “get” me! They are a joy, aren’t they?
Lovely poem, lovely family photo.
Thank you!
As a granparent who will next week celebrate birthday #79, I have five grandchildren I adore. My daughter’s two lived within a commuter train’s distance away and from the time her first was 8 weeks old, I spent every Wednesday taking care of him and then his sister who came just 19 months later. So I’ve gone from feeding them bottles, to playing so many make-believe scenarios (playing “store” with all their stuffed animals!), to visiting their elementary school rooms on grandparents’ days, to seeing them in high school plays and choral concerts, to now having gone to two of their high school graduations and visiting them in college! Ah yes….they’ve blown the wisps of the dandelions far…It is a true joy. And I must say, LOVE just beams in this poem and in the photograph of them with their parents. Continue to enjoy….build memories for a lifetime for you and them!
What a lovely, lovely story. Your presence in your grandchildren’s lives is awesome! I bet they love their times either way you, and that there are plenty of “remember that time…” stories along with the dandelion wishes. Thank you so much for your response and affirmation.
This is so sweet…. there is so much joy with children (be blessed the grandchildren)
Yes, and the joy comes in waves with the tiniest things! I love how children can see value in everything, even the little pebble the 5-year old carried around and protected like a friend. He gifted me with it when we had to leave, and I cherish it.
Grandparent: Absolutely the Best job in the world. Tears of joy every minute we’re with them….
Awww, I feel you!
Lovely. Thank you Kim.
Thank YOU!
How lovely, Kim! Your joyous Q is infectious…I am smiling away after reading this. Lovely photo too. Blessings to them.
