My hibiscus that are in the ground or pots too big to move into the garage during the January 2024 Deep Freeze are pitiful, damaged shadows of their former selves. Or just dead.
I want spring now. No, I want it yesterday. I have hibiscus dreams and want to see springtime memes.
The gallery below features some members of the Glover Gardens hibiscus family when they’re thriving, which is usually March through early December. I miss them.

I saw a photo of one of the red hibiscus today and it made me melancholy for spring, and flowers, and nature’s rambunctiousness. So I wrote a little poem.
(i’ve got) hibiscus dreams
hibiscus dreams
(when winter seems
like it won’t go away)
bring blues and greens
by any means
(let’s fast-forward to May)
golden sunbeams
sticky ice creams
giggles and outdoor play
February means
these in-betweens
(chilly nights, warming days)
hibiscus dreams
bring springtime memes
(i’m done with winter’s gray)
The Hibiscus Sadness in the Garden Today
I didn’t think anyone would read on if I put images of the hibiscus graveyard at the top of the post, but now that you’re here, check out the horrors.
That’s the same plant below; the first is early December, 2022, and the second is today. I think (hope) it will come back if I cut it at about 4″ above the root.

Here’s another before and after picture. Those sticks on the right were once the hibiscus on the left. That picture where it is close friends with the rose was taken in 2016 when the plant was gigantic and bloomed prolifically, but it hasn’t been the same since the big February freeze of 2021. It’s toast now; the pic is from today.

Hope Springs Eternal
But, hope and hibiscus spring eternal, don’t they? Check out my tenacious plants struggling to deliver on their promise.

Enough grousing already, I’m sure spring is just around the corner. The groundhog said so!
Spring Garden Meme
And now, for the springtime meme, the dumbest one ever, but oh, I can’t wait ’til those silly springtime memes are flying about!

How about you? Are you having hibiscus dreams and anticipating spring?

Lovely to look at your hibiscus while the rain batters the windows! Spring will come and I can’t wait either.
I hope you get an early spring, Anabel!
