The Simple Things: a Birthday at Home

Last year, I had a milestone birthday and a huge, wonderful party.

This year, coming off of more than a week of vacation in cool, dry Colorado, I didn’t need any fanfare.

I got some fanfare from nature anyway, though. (Yay!)

A family of white-tailed deer greeted me as I turned onto our street when returning home from work. I know they were wishing me ‘many happy returns’ as they posed for my iPhone photo before sauntering away.

My new-this-year spider hibiscus bloomed, also inspired by my birthday, don’t you think?

For dinner, I asked The Grill-Meister to move Sandwich Wednesday up to Tuesday, and he did a great job with my request of a roast beef and cheddar panini. My sister-bestie joined us and we dined al fresco.

Looks humble but is actually fab

That sandwich was THE BOMB, my friends. The oozy white stuff you see isn’t mayo – oh, no! – it’s a homemade horseradish dressing. And there are sauteed onions and two kinds of cheddar to complement the thick slices of roast beef on an onion roll. I promise to publish the recipe soon—it would be downright selfish not to share it. 😎

It was a lovely, quiet evening that started with sparkling wine and equally sparkling conversation during Happy Cocktail at the Tree House and ended with a medley of desserts.

While I love a party that’s all about me (like last year) or a splurge at a foodie-worthy restaurant (like most years), a stay-at-home, restful evening was just the ticket for this year’s birthday. I had deer, flowers, good company, a gobsmackingly-good panini, great company and a sense of self-worth and being appreciated by others.

Celebrations don’t have to be big-bang to be special. Our peaceful time in Colorado at Little House in the Rockies (re)taught me that.

🦌 It’s the little things. 🌺

What’s your favorite way to celebrate your on your birthday?
